Dragon Crossroads
In Brief
A time management game.

Installation Issues:
Dragon Crossroads downloads to a 141 MB zip file that unzips to three files, (a setup.gcd security wrapper the set-up file and a read me). The game installs to the following path by default, but can be changed if you wish. The installed game is approximately 534 MB in size.
C:\Program Files (x86)\MyPlayCity.com\Dragon Crossroads
Four shortcuts are installed to the desktop; the Play Online Games, MyPlayCity Games and shortcuts to a free online game; the name of which may vary each week can be deleted once the game has been installed. The Themida wrapper may alert your security and even block the installation. There are details in the read me about this issue.

The Game:
Dragon Crossroads is yet another in an incredibly long line of time management games that take place in a fantasy universe full of goblins, bandits and dragons. Only instead of being a fresh, polished experience, Dragon Crossroads is a game with multiple personalities; a game with fine basic mechanics, but disappointing… everything else.
The game takes place in a medieval fantasy setting, once guarded by a powerful dragon. The dragon’s child has been taken, leaving the dragon to fall into a dark depression, and the world to fall into chaos with goblins, bandits, broken roads and much more standing in your way as you attempt to set things right. Each level of this time management experience comes with a set of goals to complete, from fixing roads and buildings to defeating bandits and more, but many tasks are repeated level after level, which makes the game feel a lot less varied than it ultimately could.
Regardless of its final goals, each level will see you balancing the use of items like food, wood, stones, gold and more. Each item is created in a different building, with most being upgradeable over time. Upgrades obviously increase a building’s productivity, but purchasing these upgrades takes resources away from the end goal(s) in each level. This brings about the basic amount of strategy that you’d find in any similar time-management game, as the time limit on each stage offers Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals depending on how quickly you can complete the required tasks.

Thankfully, the workers in Dragon Crossroads move incredibly fast, without the need for special power-ups. Similarly, actions can be queued far into the future, so long as there’s a clear walking path from your worker to whichever item the action is going to be performed on. It’s definitely possible to play the entire game a few seconds into the future, as you wait for your workers to catch up in the background (which is a good thing), but at the same time, some of the level designs are so convoluted, with only one specific path being available for progression, that it makes things more confusing than fun.
Even though fast workers are a huge plus, the rest of Dragon Crossroads starts to fall apart pretty quickly. Early on, goblins are introduced to the game, and they steal 20 seconds each from your overall clock at the beginning of the level. There’s nothing you can do to stop these goblins, so you must instead waste 5-10 second at the beginning of each stage clicking on them to reclaim your lost time. This is a completely unnecessary feature that simply feels unfair, as goblins may be hidden behind trees or other structures. Additionally, the game’s graphics are downright ugly. Animals and trees in each background image are static and have skewed shapes, workers and goblins have ugly character models, and there’s no flash or polish to the game’s text menus or tutorials.
Dragon Crossroads looks and plays like a game that was created with the best of intentions, but lacks an attention to detail that would make the game really pop. The basic gameplay here works, and actually works well with the aforementioned fast workers and task queuing, but everything else feels amateurish at best. With so many other (better) time management games up for grabs on Big Fish and beyond, this is one you can easily skip without a regret.

Conclusion:
For me time management games are the least favourite arcade genre and therefore find it hard to be positive. This game is particularily repetitive and tedious, but, if you are an aficianado of such games, then you'll find this a run of the mill TM game. I'm sure some community members will enjoy this, but I wont score it as i've only played a few levels so far, and am unlikely to continue.

Problems getting the game to work:
If you're having problems installing or activating or getting Dragon Crossroads to work please visit the FAQ's Thread HERE and read through the communities comments because sometimes fixes have already been posted, for example, a common issue seen since the Themida wrapper was introduced three years ago is that some community members installation of the game are blocked by their security because Themida code has been known to hide malware, (usually an error message is flagged for example 'The executable is corrupted' even though in reality it is not); so as a precaution some anti malware programs will block and even delete the suspect installation files even though the files (i.e. the setup, read me and setup.gcd files are actually totally free from malware. This issue can be solved either by rebooting your computer in safe mode with networking or a quicker method is to temporarily turn off your security software to allow the installation. You could also try whitelisting the setup.gcd file. In the almost 12 years this game giveaway site has been operating there has 'never' been a game given away that was infected with malware.

Nice little adventure with lots to do and good graphics. I can even play it without my computer glasses on. Challenging enough that I am not getting gold on every level the first time around.

my ISP has been ' BANNED ' from the GOTD site..
why ? i do not know.
i am here now with a VPN software to alert others of the
' 503 Service Unavailable ' message you get when trying to access this site.
i would like to ask, what have i done so offensive , to be banned from here ?
i would like to apologize here and now for whatever it was and ask to be forgiven. thank you White Rabbit for this service.

little ricky,

"503 Service Unavailable Error is an HTTP response status code indicating that a server is temporarily unable to handle the request. This may be due to the server being overloaded or down for maintenance."

It does not mean your ISP has been banned. WR is a member just like you and me and does a great deal to help us but does not own the service.

Please do a search when you don't know what an web error code means. You can learn a lot by searching, lots of info out there if you look for it. I use duckduckgo. Have a good day.

LadyLei,
i DID do a search and got the same standard answer you describe....
i re installed Windows, tried my other TWO pc's and two different browsers.
until i used the VPN service i was, and am, UNABLE to log onto GAOTD website.
the standard answer of , the problem is with you, doesn't apply here, this isn't my first day on the internet, so your condescending reply is somewhat unwelcome..
if the server is ' overloaded ' or ' down for service ', please explain how i CAN get to the website WITH VPN and i can not without it.

little ricky,

..................................Moderator comment.....................................

Hi little Ricky , Just to be sure I checked all the banned IP addresses as I am not the only person moderating. Some of the admins do occasionally moderate, especially when I'm not available. Your IP address is not in the blacklisted list. Lady Lei's explanation is the most probable cause. As you have discovered, using a vpn can 'at this time' be a workaround and allow those blacklisted to still gain access.

Whiterabbit-uk,
i have checked ' my end ' using other computers and browsers from my home, i have the same ISP where i work and have no problem getting to the website there.
this first occurred about a week and a half ago, i was at the website, went to a few more sites, then when i tried to come back to GAOTD that is when i got the 503 error.
even went to the board service for troubleshooting.
i will keep checking back to see what happens.
thank you so much for your response, i appreciate your efforts.

Hi little Ricky , No problem..

little ricky, I work in IT. After reading the entire forum thread mentioned above, it sounds to me like it could be a DNS problem. which would explain why using a VPN would solve it.
If you want to manually change the DNS on your router to one that definitely works with GGOTD, the DNS I'm using here is 79.79.79.77 (secondary is 79.79.79.78). As others have explained, you can check the current settings first to put things back the way they were after your test; or of course most routers do (or can) obtain DNS automatically. If you want to try the 'good' DNS addresses above, then obviously you would need to turn off "Obtain DNS automstically" or whatever your router's admin panel calls it.
I hope that helps: DNS problems can be VERY annoying until the owner gets them sorted out. Definitely worth reporting this to your ISP in case it's a symptom of a wider issue with their DNS?

Cad Delworth, It is also possible, that a DNS-flush can cure the problem.
Get rid of all the old DNS-numbers

Dragon Crossroads is a typical collect resources and fix the road type of time management game.

What's different:

You have to find goblins at the start of each level to get your time back and if you have to remember to look for them.
The chests also have time in them.
The game is fast-paced which means you never have to wait around - the guys run fast, resources replenish quickly.
Upgrades only cost gold - not resources.

What's the same:

You can click ahead.
Resources are only counted when they reach their tent - not when they pick them up.
You have to send a worker to collect everything, nothing is automatically collected.

Strategy:

Well here's the problem. The game has great strategy for the first 10 levels only. You have many paths to choose, many buildings to upgrade, many choices to make and you have to make the right ones to get gold - because of the fast-paced nature of the game it's a bit of a click frenzy. Often the strategy is to choose what not to do. But after level 10 there's no more strategy. You're just going through the motions. You basically don't have to do half the things on the level to pass with gold. Between level 10 and 20 I had plenty of time left getting gold and was bored with the game. I stopped playing after level 20 - and I only played past level 15 in the hope that it would get better. It didn't.

What's bad:

At the start of the menu they show you your tasks and then move this sign in a way that makes you sea-sick.
There's some shaking of the screen on one of the levels.
The tutorial - you have to remember to switch it off on every level because if you don't then it stops the entire game until you click on what they're telling you to click - which might not be the thing you wanted to do next - but it forces you to. In the first 10 levels the tutorial can actually prevent you from getting gold.

Level 12 Alert:
There's a path through the dragon's mouth - so you can just click on resources on the path above you and the workers will automatically go there.

I was left with the distinct impression that this game was geared towards sites that give you the first 1 hour free - because you're going to think it's a great game in the first 1 hour. And then buy it, and be disappointed. It had so much potential, but it didn't live up to it.

A Reviewer, Very nice and detailed job: thanks!

"At the start of the menu they show you your tasks and then move this sign in a way that makes you sea-sick."

AMEN to that! So many games seem to think it's necessary to 'jiggle' things — or feature my other pet hate, smooth-scrolling text. UGH! Both as you say make me sea-sick. The one exception being smooth-scrolling game credits: perhaps because they are the norm on TV and my brain doesn't rebel at that?

So yes, +1 to NO JIGGLING, ZOOMING, TWIRLING, or any other unnecessary animations (are you listening too, Microsoft???) please, you game companies out there. We're not all 12 and up for that sort of thing!
